Since Brooklyn is buried, and I have some time in between mandolin playing and digging into some pretty stellar albums that I received as Christmas gifts, I have decided to offer up one last feature before the door closes on 2010. With all of the reflections on the "best of 2010", I'd like to offer up some of the early 2011 releases that I am most looking forward to getting my hands on.

Jeffrey Foucault Discusses His New "Cold Satellite" Album

Jeffrey Foucault recently released his sixth studio album, Cold Satellite, on November 16th. The album was born out of a collaboration between Mr. Foucault and longtime friend, and contemporary American Poet, Lisa Olstein. Ms. Olstein is the author of Radio Crackling Radio Gone, and Lost Alphabet, both published by Copper Canyon Press.

Mr. Foucault is someone I have been following for quite some time. I was initially turned on to his work when I head the Redbird album, an excellent collaboration with Kris Delmhorst and Peter Mulvey. From there I picked up Ghost Repeater and his debut album, Miles From The Lightning.

I quickly picked up a copy of Trouble, which, along with Palomino, has put me on the trail for the rest of the band's output.

Live: Sarah Jarosz 10/29/2010 at Mercury Lounge, NYC

Sarah Jarosz casually strolled up upon the low-lit stage at NYC's Mecury Lounge last Friday night, among a collection of stringed instruments and amplifiers. She slung her banjo over her shoulder to the welcoming applause of fans, admirers, and as she later gratefully acknowledged, her dear friends in attendance. In that instant, the room proved the perfect setting to allow Ms. Jarosz to take the sole spotlight, and without any accompaniment, offer up an evening of her unique songwriting and impressive musicianship.

A Conversation with Sarah Jarosz

I first discovered Sarah Jarosz when a good friend of mine recommended that, knowing how much of an excited-beginning mandolin player I am, I check out her debut LP, Song Up In Her Head. Since obtaining my own copy, the album has been in pretty heavy rotation on my music devices for quite some time.

Bonnie Prince Billy & The Cairo Gang @ Monster Island Basement 4/1/10

Bonnie Prince Billy & The Cairo Gang played three sold out shows (200 capacity each) between April 1st and 2nd at the Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn. Thursday night offered 2 performances: an early 8pm show followed by a second one at 10:30. Friday there was a single show at 8pm. I was lucky enough to attend the early show on Thursday and it really was as eccentric and singular as Mr. Oldham himself.

I saw Mr. Oldham when he was touring for the release of Master and Everyone years back, and most recently at the Apollo supporting his last LP, Beware. For both of those shows Mr. Oldham was supported with a band (and each performance was excellent). But last week it really was something special to be in such a small room, and to have the unique experience of being able to just share the music with the man himself.

Bill Callahan Brings The Show To You On "Rough Travel For A Rare Thing"

Rough Travel For A Rare Thing, the new live recording from Bill Callahan, opens with a quickly spoken, deadpan "Gonna get right down to business tonight" and launches immediately into the opener "Our Anniversary". This is Bill Callahan's first live LP and it presents quite a satisfying cross-section of his career (no pun intended- looking at the cover art). By no means is this a "best of" collection or a definitive representation of all of his work artistically. It is rather, a great place for newcomers to start with Mr. Callahan's large back catalog, and an article that fans will easily enjoy, anticipating his next appearance in town.

Justin Townes Earle @ Bowery Ballroom 3/5/2010

Bouncing onto the stage at his sold out Friday night performance at Bowery Ballroom, Justin Townes Earle and his two band mates, Bren Davies on upright bass and Josh Henley on fiddle, fired up the crowd with a rollicking rendition of "Poor Fool". The three followed up with the stellar "They Killed John Henry" and "Halfway To Jackson".
